In the spring of 2021, STONE LOGISTICS signed a contract for the implementation of a project for the delivery of goods with a total weight of 2,226 tons, 65 units of which were oversized, and 3 of them were oversized and heavy.
The shipment of power equipment started in May 2021 from the port of Antwerp, Belgium to Russia. Under the terms of the contract, our company has assumed obligations to transport 475 five units of cargo, including all multimodal logistics from the loading point in the Belgian port to the construction sites of energy companies in Russia. At the stage of project preparation, STONE-LOGISTICS engineers developed and agreed with the customer loading, fastening, reloading schemes, as well as modes of transport at all stages of delivery.
The equipment was loaded onto two of its own river-sea class vessels, according to the approved cargo plan for shipment by sea to the port of St. Petersburg terminal Bronka.
Upon arrival at the MMPC “Bronka”, the dismantling of the cargo fastening began, in parallel, the preparation of barge-towing trains was carried out. Transshipment at the port was carried out using two LIEBHERR LHM 800 mobile cranes with a lifting capacity of 302 tons each and a traverse with a lifting capacity of 500 tons. With the assistance of the specialists of the port “Bronka”, unloading from ships to the berth was carried out, cargo was installed on transport lodges. The customs clearance procedure was carried out, then three positions of oversized equipment were loaded onto two river barge platforms, as their further route ran to different endpoints. The light oversized cargo is shipped on low-frame trawls, and the rest of the equipment is in standard semi-trailers.
From the port of Bronka, a steam turbine on board a platform barge passed through Lake Ladoga along the Volga-Baltic Canal along the Suda River to a temporary berth. The river route exceeded 855 kilometers and took seven days.
An integrated approach to solving problems related to the transportation of oversized cargo includes not only transportation issues, elaboration and coordination of the route, but also the arrangement of temporary berthing facilities. By the time of arrival of the barge with a steam turbine weighing 197 tons to the place of unloading, a temporary berth for unloading by the RO-RO method had been built in the shortest possible time. By this time, vehicles consisting of 2 MAN tractors and an 18-axle modular trailer with a total load capacity of 540 tons have been mobilized to the berth. The road transportation from the berth to the unloading point at the enterprise was thirty-seven kilometers and lasted five days.
A large number of obstacles were overcome along the cargo route.
By the specialists of the company “STONE-LOGISTICS” it was agreed cargo to travel through the railway crossing of the Oktyabrskaya railway, received permission for a two-hour “window” in the train schedule for this section. For the transportation of oversized cargo, the crossing and the adjacent territory were prepared and equipped according to all the rules of transportation of KTG.
On the remaining sections of the road, the power line was disconnected, followed by the lifting of wires for the passage of a moving train with cargo. The entire route of the road train with a steam turbine was accompanied by cover cars and a special battalion of the traffic police.
The main obstacle on the route was an overpass with a passing height of just over six meters, while the height of the road train with cargo was more than seven meters. To overcome this obstacle, it was decided to use a portal system with a lifting capacity of three hundred and sixty tons and a road train with a lower loading height. In front of the overpass, a portal system was assembled to overload the turbine to another coupling, which made it possible to reduce the height of the road train with cargo for the passage of a difficult section of the track. Further, the portal system was disassembled and reassembled after the overpass, and the entire operation of reloading from one type of vehicle coupling to another was performed in reverse order.
Upon arrival at the territory of the power unit under construction, the fence was dismantled, four kilometers of roadway designed for a load with a total weight of 344 tons were built, access roads were expanded, a special site for the installation of a portal system was erected. With its help, the turbine was reloaded onto self-propelled modules and delivered to the installation site. At this stage, the delivery of equipment to the Vologda region was completed.
Another cargo shipment left the port of Bronka along the Neva Bay, through Lake Ladoga, to the Chernaya River. Where vehicles consisting of a 21-axle modular trailer of the Faymonville brand and MAN and Mercedes tractors were mobilized for the arrival of two positions of oversized equipment, namely a gas turbine weighing 308 tons and a generator weighing 354 tons. By the efforts of STONE-LOGISTICS specialists, the equipment was fixed to the road train, unloaded from the barge platform to the shore by the RO-RO method, and according to the agreed route, alternate cargo delivery to the final point on the territory of the enterprise was carried out, accompanied by cover vehicles. The gas turbine and generator delivered to the power unit are designed to modernize and increase the capacity of the energy system of the Leningrad region.
Thanks to the well-coordinated work of our company’s specialists, the transportation of the entire volume of power equipment was carried out within the terms agreed with the customer. We work in the interests of our clients, overcoming any obstacles.
